Once lined with 40 year old dogwood trees, Sunnehanna was a beautiful private road. Just off Freewoods Road, Sunnehanna is the main access road in and out of Island Green. With over 7,500 daily travelers and 400 more homes on the way, Sunnehanna is desperate need or repair, resurfacing and expansion.
Island Green was built upon gently rolling terrain accented with an abundance of azaleas and dogwoods. Once known for its 18 hole golf course, perfectly manicured champions greens, superbly conditioned Bermuda fairways, and its namesake island green finishing hole. The golf course was sold, foreclosed and then resold by 2017 for over 1.45 million dollars. The current owner has partnered with corporate builders and is actively building new homes on what was once a pristine golf course.
The estimated completion for the new builds is vague, but won't be before 2024. This has created safety concerns and obstacles for residents, homeowners, and wild life alike. Since the development started there has been an increase of traffic, pollution, loss of wild life and flooding.
Island Green residents banned together to try to stop the construction. From protests, petitions, news casts and articles, even attending city issued meetings to get their voices heard. Even though this development isn't to code, the Island Green estate was grandfathered into a property clause giving them permission to overdevelop.
As the construction continues, our roads suffer from over usage. The current owner will not rebuild Sunnehanna or maintain it until AFTER the developments are completed. He has also abandoned managing the front entrance, the condemned Club House, ponds, and left over fairways. Maintaining these areas is critical to the safety of all who live in Island Green, residents and wildlife alike. Over the years volunteers have put forth efforts and funds to cut the grass, keep the lights on and fill potholes.
Once the 400 homes are built, the once private road will become a public road. The owner believes the homeowners should pay to manage and repair, but all residents believe that responsibility is with the owner of the new developments.
Over the years, the IGCSA ( a.k.a. The General Council) has absorbed other responsibilities like public lighting, drainage problems, manage road repair complaints, fairway maintenance, front entrance maintenance and communication. Thus adopting the new title of Island Green Community Services Association to reestablish our community and services. Although the community has changed we are proud to say we have changed together. We continue to anticipate future needs and establish new roles to ensure we have a safe community to live in.

Robert Williamsen of Cornelius, N.C., has foreclosed on the property based on a defaulted loan of $1.45 million made to course owner Ray Watts in November 2015. Today, the maintenance is a combined effort between residence and the builder.

The road will be resurfaced and the entrance will be updated once all the homes are built. There is no real estimated date.

Once the 400 homes are completed, road work will start on Sunnehanna. At that time, the guard shack will come down.

There is a resident who highlights the potholes on Sunnehanna with bright spray paint. Although we don't know who it is, we know they keep their identify hidden to protect themselves. The road is still private property and this could be considered vandalism.
Dan Sennema is a long time resident of Island Green. He is the one who does most of the patch work on Sunnehanna. He takes donation, but typically funds these projects himself. Check out more about his work on his facebook page: I AM ISLAND GREEN
Dan Sennema was interviewed by WMBF about how he has taken upon himself to help repair Sunnehanna in Island Green. He’s been at it for the last five years with hopes of preventing some costly repairs for his neighbors and himself.
